Time to Say Goodbye

Time to Say Goodbye

Life is funny sometimes, isn’t it?  People pass in and out of lives every day… or sometimes, animals, as in my recent experience.  I was at my riding lesson Wednesday morning, again working on training my project horse Sterling.  As you’ll remember, I’ve written several posts about him before.  Well, this may be the last.

I’m going to be missing two riding lessons because my family and I are going on vacation, and as I was cooling down Sterling after a rather fast-paced lesson, my riding instructor informed me that Sterling might no longer be at the farm when I return.  A family of triplet girls is considering buying him.  Fortunately, the girls take lessons at the farm, so we know that he’ll be in good hands, and I know the girls from when they participated in a riding camp I helped my instructor host last year.  They’re sweet girls, and I like them a lot… but still, it’ll be an adjustment.  I’ve been working with Sterling since April of this year, and after so many months of training him, it just seems strange to think that he suddenly won’t be there on the farm anymore.

As I was untacking Sterling and hosing him off, I had an opportunity to say goodbye to him in my own way alone.  It left me solemn, but I determined in my mind to enjoy our last moments together… the last time I’ll ever pull my saddle down from his back, the last time I’ll ever pat his warm neck, the last time that I’ll ever spray him down with the water and watch the white foam of sweat run down his soft dark brown flanks.  But he’s ready for another rider.  My time on him has paid off, and he’s a great riding horse.  I know the triplets will love him.

But in my moments of quiet solitude with him, I felt the Lord reminding me of how short our time truly is with people in our lives.  People cross our paths every day, some stay for a while, and then they’re gone.  We never know when someone might exit the stage of our lives.  People pass in and out of our little worlds.  Some move away, some we lose connection with, some leave this life permanently.  How important it is to be sure we enjoy every moment that we’re blessed with to spend with our friends and family.  Our loved ones are all too often taken for granted.  They’re there all the time, and we suppose that they always will be; that makes it easy to pass over them as just a set fixture in our lives, but we should never forget to express our affection and appreciation for them.  They’re such a big part of our lives, aren’t they?  So if you haven’t told your loves ones recently just how much they mean to you and thanked them for being there for you, maybe it’s time to simply say “Thank you,” and “I love you.”  Sometimes we don’t say those two phrases enough- sometimes we’re left regretful over lost opportunities to speak these words- but no matter what, there are still people in your life to whom you have a chance to express your love and gratitude for.  It isn’t too late to start.  Let’s take the time to do so before it’s time to say goodbye.

~We’ve all heard of the phrase “pulling on her/ his heartstrings,” but heart-chords?  I was struggling to decide what to name my blog.  I wanted it to be a name that was both creative and meaningful.  As I pondered, my gaze fell upon my acoustic guitar where it stands in my bedroom, and the Lord reminded me that our hearts- our lives- are instruments.  They are constantly in song, but what melody our heart plays is each of our own decisions.  They can play a melody for praise or for entertainment.  A musician selects his songs according to his audience.  So do we.  Whether our audience is the world or the Lord, our song will be different.  This blog is designed to first, increase my awareness in finding God and His guidance in my every day and second, to share the music lessons He teaches me in tuning my heart to learn the chords of praise He longs to play on my heart-instrument.  Music is a powerful tool.  Use it for His glory.  “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.  Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40:3

Words

Words

Hi, everyone!  I haven’t had much time this past week to put together a whole lot, but I just wanted to share a few things with you.
Last week I had to write an eight-line poem as an assignment.  I could choose the topic, the metrical foot, and the rhyme pattern as long as it had eight-lines arranged in two stanzas.  True, this is probably more suited for The Avid Author blog, but considering I’m in the middle of a writer’s tips series there, I decided to share my poem with you here on Heart-chords instead.  I don’t claim to be a poet, but rhymes come pretty easy to me.  Here’s how it came out.  Just another reminder of how powerful words are and the effects they can have if we don’t take the time to stop and think before speaking.  “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.  Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.  My brothers, this should not be.” (James 3: 9&10)

Words
The pen hovered over the paper
Like an arrow o’er its mark
Words! So dull and inadequate
To express what was in her heart
 Oh, the heated argument!
The fiery words that tore them apart
And now slowly drew the pen I’m sorry
Words giving love a new start

And for two announcements…  As of October 1st, I can begin expecting to hear from Athanatos Christian Ministries concerning the novel contest to which I submitted my first book back in July.  I’ll share more on that later when I hear first word from them.
And secondly, Heart-chords and The Avid Author are going to be temporarily neglected for a few weeks because my family and I are going on vacation to New York and Pennsylvania.  We’ll be visiting Niagara Falls for the first time, attending at the spectacular Sight & Sound Theater to watch a play dramatizing the Bible story of Jonah, visiting family up there, touring the Gettysburg battlefield, and staying on a real Old Order Amish working dairy farm!  Lots of excitement ahead!  We’ll be returning on the fourth of October, and shortly thereafter, I’ll be resuming my blogging, writing about our experiences.  I’m going expectantly, and I’m so excited to see what the Lord’s going to speak to me to share with you all!  Until then, reader-friends, take care, and I hope you’ll check back in a few weeks to hear about the lessons I learn on our trip.  As a parting lesson though, make sure you don’t miss my post which follows, titled Time to Say Goodbye.

9/11... We Remember

                9/11... We Remember   (Ground Zero)

Today is September 11th.  For some of you, it may be just another day, but for us Americans, it is remembered as the day that our freedom was threatened.  9/11.

I remember well that day in 2001- eleven years ago.  I was sitting in our kitchen that morning when my dad called.  My mom answered the phone, and I can still remember the shock that had filled her voice, the fear I had felt at the sound of it.  She had hurried to the TV in our family room and turned on the screen to the news channel, and there we watched in horror as the crashing of the World Trade Center replayed before our eyes.  It had seemed unreal as we all watched in deathly silence.  America attacked?  It had seemed impossible.  But the skyline of New York City as we all knew it was changed forever…

Bethany glanced down toward the corner of her laptop scene as she worked.  Almost nine o’clock.  She swiveled her chair slightly to gaze out the large windows behind her desk in her office of the several-story building.  The sun was just beginning to peep around the tops of the skyscrapers straining up to reach the dawn-lit sky over New York City.  Somewhere from overhead came the distant rumble of a jet gliding through the clouds toward some unknown destination.  She sighed in contentment.  It was a breathtaking sight as the city awoke to a new day.

She turned back to her open laptop.  But for the business world, the day had already begun long ago.  There was work to be done for the meeting scheduled that morning on her daily planner.  The sound of the jet came louder as it seemingly passed by overhead.  Confusion marked her countenance as the roar of the airplane grew steadily louder… too loud, she noted to herself in concern.  As she reached for the mug of coffee on her desktop, a resounding crash came breaking through the stillness of the hour.  Bethany started up from her chair, sweeping a glance about in panic.  The noise was so deafening, where it had come from, she couldn’t tell, but she knew something was wrong.  It hadn’t sounded good at all.  Like… a collision.

Next came the terrifying sound like that of a wrecking ball when it demolishes a building, and Bethany screamed as a corner of the roof of her office ceiling fell apart.  More of the ceiling followed.  It was as though time slowed its pace.  She ran to the door of her office and pulled at the brass doorknob.  Stuck tight.  Something was hindering its opening.  She frantically tugged at the knob again and again, the horrific roar remaining steady in its sound.  Behind her the ceiling continued to cave down rapidly, the glass of her windows shattering, and on the other side of the door came screams of panic and sheer terror along with running footsteps, masses of the occupants of the building scurrying to evacuate before it was too late.  The alarms of the building rang out hardly audible amidst the crashing before they fell silent.

The door finally swung open, and Bethany started from the office before stopping at the sight before her eyes.  Where the floor of the hallway had once been was only a mass of rubble now… ceiling, floor, drywall… everything from the upper stories.  Bethany screamed again in horror.  There was no way out.  She felt the floor giving beneath her feet.  “Help me,” she screamed hoarsely.  She covered her face with her hands.  “Get me out!”  The ceiling above her collapsed a moment later.

Jacob slammed on the brakes of the fire engine, bringing the racing truck to a halt before the collapsing buildings.  Woodenly, he stepped down from the driver’s seat, unbelieving the scene before him.  He gazed up at the two skyscrapers’ tops disappearing into a cloud of thick smoke. The Twin Towers… falling?  The scene was pure chaos: fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, rescue vehicles of all kinds at the scene of the tragedy.  Screams came from the towers, and orders came through the radio in his hand.  People stood by watching in horror as the buildings collapsed.  To run into the rumble on a mission of rescue sounded insane to rationality.  He too wanted to cover his face with his hands, the scene was too horrific to gaze upon… too unreal.  But that would do those in the building no good.  He turned to his firefighters and roused himself into action.  “All right, come on, let’s go,” he ordered.

By eleven o’clock, just two hours later, the Twin Towers had collapsed to the ground and disappeared from the skyline of New York City.  The third hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C., and a fourth into a rural area of Pennsylvania.  In the Twin Towers alone, almost three thousand people in the buildings were trapped and lost their lives.  Many more were killed in the other crashes along with those men and women who arrived on the scenes to help.  America’s strength and freedoms were challenged, and the nation mourned.

Please join me in praying for all of those who lost loved ones as a result of that fateful day as we remember the heroes of 9/11.

“Patriotism is that love for country in the hearts of the people which shall make that country strong to resist foreign opposition and domestic intrigue-- which impresses each and every individual with a sense of the inalienable rights of others and prepares him to accept the responsibility of protecting those rights.” ~ American Tribune, March 7, 1890

“This is my country, and I believe in her, and I believe in her flag, and I’ll defend her and I’ll fight for her and serve her.  If she has any ills, I’ll stand by her and hold her hand until in God’s given time, through her wisdom and her consideration for the welfare of the entire nation, things are made right again.” ~ General Daniel (Chappie) James: U.S. four-star general

Out of Control

Out of Control

Happy Labor Day, everyone!  Have you ever had an experience when you just felt out of control?  Maybe it was a severe car accident where you saw the collision just about to occur, but you had no time to do anything about it except for cover your face, scream, and brace yourself for the impact.  Well, I had one of those moments this past Wednesday, and for me, my experience came while riding a horse.

I was training my project horse Sterling, not necessarily just riding for mere pleasure.  What I was asking him to do wasn’t a terribly complex maneuver, but he was very adamantly against complying with my authority, which is surprising for Sterling who has a normally fairly passive disposition.  Now if you ride horses or especially if you train horses, you know that it can be dangerous and risky at times.  Accidents happen.  But Sterling’s misbehavior that day was completely unexpected.

Sterling had been fighting against the bit and throwing quite a temper-tantrum like a three-year-old, when all of a sudden, he reared up completely unforeseen when I asked him yet again to side-pass to the left.  For the end of the story, no, I was not hurt nor did I fall, and Sterling was soon under my control again… and yes, worked doubly hard as discipline.  But that was my first time riding a horse that had ever reared before, and I’ll admit, I was scared once the initial panic subsided after the ordeal.  Sometimes, experiences are difficult to put into words, but I think my riding instructor described it best.  It’s like your reins are your emergency brakes, and when your horse’s head is up in the air like that, there’s nothing in the world you can do to stop him.  For that moment until he comes back down again, you have no control over that animal, and you are completely at the mercy of your horse.  All you can do is hold on and pray.

Later I was reflecting on the morning when I realized just how often we all encounter experiences like that in our own ways.  Life is like a horse.  We’re traveling along through life, feeling like we’re completely in control… when all of a sudden.  Period.  The unexpected occurs.  Something goes wrong when we least expect it to, and we find ourselves out of control.  Our life is running like a car about to veer off the road and into a ditch.  We’ve lost the wheel, and we’ve lost the reins.

But even in that moment when I had lost control of Sterling, God had never lost control of him.  Even in our moments when we feel like life is running out of our hands, God is still in control, and He is still reigning in every situation of our lives.  He still has the ultimate say, and He knows what’s best for us… and yes, that includes sometimes letting us find ourselves in that ditch in order that we may attain humility and refocus our perspective of our need for Him and His direction in our lives.  Sometimes we just don’t have any control at all over situations in our lives and are helpless with the material tools we’re accustomed to using.  Like when the boss lets you go from your job, when the tests come back positive with cancer, when the bullies in school falsely accuse you of cheating.  Our material minds just can’t get around situations and circumstances sometimes.  Isn’t it good news though and so comforting and reassuring to know that in our most chaotic moments and in the biggest ordeals of our lives when it seems like the walls are caving in around us, He’s still in control and holding everything together?  In fact, it is in our weakest moments that we realize just how strong and powerful He truly is.

Once I had Sterling back under control again, it was a little intimidating returning right to cantering him around part of the arena.  I admit, the idea made me a little nervous, and an anxious thought crossed my mind.  When we do lose control of our lives and have those frightening moments when we feel like we’re about to crash, it’s scary to pick up the reins again when God hands them to us.  If you’ve ever been on an organized trail ride at a commercial farm, you can understand what I mean when I say that seasoned trail horses like that know the trail they’re on.  They’re heading out on it for the sixth time that day, they know every twist, hill, and turn, and the inexperienced first-time rider on his back virtually doesn’t even need to hold the reins if he doesn’t want to.  That horse knows what he’s doing, and he’s just going to follow in line behind the horse in front of him.  He’s like a mechanical horse.  If you set a horse walking along the rail in an arena and don’t steer him, he’ll probably just keep walking around the perimeter of the arena, following the railing, circling like a carrousel horse on a merry-go-round.  When God hands us the reins again, it’s easy to want to just leave the reins where they are on the horse’s neck and just allow him to follow the horses walking along the rail- we feel safe that way, but God doesn’t call us to live our lives following in the well-worn path of the world.  “For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.” (Mt 7:13)  He calls us to travel through life on a different road, a different path that sometimes veers away from what is the generally accepted course of the world’s society.  It has twists and turns and the unexpected, and therefore, we can’t just allow our lives to follow in the common footsteps of others, but we need to pick up the reins and be willing to steer off of the railing when the Lord as our guide calls us to travel a different path.  Yes, there will be unexpected moments when we feel like we’ve lost control, but He will always be there still in ultimate control, and yes, we will fall sometimes even, but even in those times, He will always be there to catch us in His loving arms and set us aright again.

My experience of finding myself in a situation out of control shook me up for a few minutes, but like every incident that happens, I learned something from it.  I learned what to expect next time and what signs to look for to avoid a recurrence of the episode.  Just as I learned from my experience, so should we evaluate our falls and accidents every time as well and learn from our mistakes.  There’s nothing wrong with making mistakes- it’s a natural part of life- so long as you learn from them and learn how to avoid them next time.  And remember, just because we’ve lost our control in a situation, does not mean that God has lost His position of role.  He never has, He never can, and He never will.  His rule is more powerful than we could ever imagine.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Psalm 46:1-3
